Establishment of the International Mechanical Engineering and Technology Poster Competition (iMETPC)

The International Mechanical Engineering and Technology Poster Competition (iMETPC) was established as part of an initiative to transform the assessment of final year project presentations for Mechanical Engineering students at the Faculty of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering (FKMP), Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM). In Semester 1, Academic Session 2023/2024, a total of 36 students from the FYP 2 course were given the opportunity to shift from the traditional viva voce format to an open poster presentation held during the inaugural Mechanical Open Day in January 2024. This new approach not only introduced an alternative assessment element but also enhanced students’ confidence in sharing their research outcomes visually and interactively with the faculty community and invited guests.

Following the positive reception and encouraging impact, the poster session was continued and expanded into a larger event in January 2025. At that time, the competition was officially named the International Mechanical Engineering and Technology Poster Competition (iMETPC). The competition was elevated to an international scale to widen participation opportunities and strengthen the faculty’s visibility as a hub of mechanical engineering knowledge. iMETPC was introduced as a free platform, enabling participants from diverse backgrounds to join without financial barriers. Its inaugural edition attracted interest from several local and international universities, as well as participation from secondary schools, polytechnics, and TVET institutions eager to showcase their research projects and innovations through academic posters.The establishment of iMETPC not only creates an inclusive and competitive learning environment but also elevates the faculty’s reputation in pioneering international-level alternative assessment approaches that align with the aspirations of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR 4.0).
